Installing a garden office: the ideal solution for remote working

Recently, we have all come to understand the importance of remote working. Thanks to it, millions of people were able to continue working from home, without the risk of losing their jobs. But working isn't always straightforward when children are around or when your partner interrupts your video conference calls. The solution? A garden office! CliKIT shares all its secrets with you today.

What is a garden office?

As its name suggests, a garden office is a space set up outside your home so that you can work remotely in peace. Made up of one or two rooms, the garden office is separated from the rest of the home… Without being too far away either! The idea is to have your own personal work cocoon, ideal for remote working.

Unlike a garden studio — an annex that houses either a guest room or a small utility space — a garden office is dedicated to remote working. As such, it is of great interest to self-employed workers and independent contractors. This space, once fitted out with all the necessary equipment, can serve as a practice or a professional meeting venue. Of course, those who don't want to embark on such a construction project can simply set up their PC on a small table in a veranda, or in a winter garden for an occasionally heated room.

What you need to know before setting up a garden office

So yes, on paper, the garden office is a dream. Yet in reality, few installations like these have come to fruition. The reason? A number of constraints before finally enjoying this precious gem. With the growth of remote working, the landscape may shift… But in any case, a garden office cannot be built on a whim.

Imagine you are a professional working from home. You would like to have a room dedicated to your work but have no way of creating one within your home. There is now a way to extend your house… Without having to knock down walls!

But the construction of a garden office cannot be improvised. Depending on the size of the outbuilding you wish to build, the procedure changes:

  • For an outdoor garden office below 20m²: you will need to submit a prior declaration of works. This declaration is not done in a hurry… It will be important to comply with the Local Urban Development Plan (PLU) of your municipality to ensure you are building in accordance with the rules.
  • For an outdoor garden office exceeding 20m²: it will be necessary to obtain a building permit.

Of course, this comes with particular attention to standards and thermal regulations. The construction of an outdoor garden office remains very strictly regulated.

One last thing: the location of your outdoor office must be carefully thought out. Ideally, it should not be too far from the main home, so as to remain close to the electrical system for the proper functioning of your equipment.

Why install an office in your garden?

While for some it may seem like an accessory, for others a garden office is a genuine necessity. During lockdown, desk sales soared and the new desires of French people in terms of housing mainly concern outdoor space. The good news is that it is possible to reconcile new wishes with new needs.

For regular remote workers, the garden office offers a significant advantage. Beyond being a room dedicated to work, it is a space that is physically separated from the living area. When working from home, it can be difficult to know when to stop. The right to disconnect does not exist (or barely does), and setting boundaries between private and professional life is not always easy.

That is why a garden office is a worthwhile investment. You will be obliged to leave this small room to return to your family and enjoy precious moments with them.

What is the price of such a setup?

As for the price, garden office prices vary considerably. On average, a complete garden office (including equipment, insulation, and electrical and heating supply) costs around 10,000 euros for a 5m² room.

For those who wish to build it themselves, all the necessary materials can be found in specialist shops. However, the benefit is not very worthwhile given all the energy it will require… But, after all, sometimes you have to let your inner architect speak. Those who are less handy need not worry: flat-pack garden offices also exist, and thankfully so!
