Installing a carport — do you need a building permit?

Like pergolas, carports are increasingly popular in individual residences. In front of the house, on the side of the main entrance, or even placed in front of the garage, the carport can easily be installed most of the time thanks to modern, sturdy, and elegant structures.

First of all...

As with many installations to be carried out at home, it is legitimate to wonder whether or not a building permit is required for a carport. Not without a certain logic, the authorizations and obligations differ according to several criteria.

While reminding you of the main advantages of a carport, CliKIT informs you about the obligations and in particular, the possible building permits to request before taking the plunge and going for a carport that enhances the exterior and protects your vehicle.

So, is a building permit required when you want to install a carport for your car?

Building permit for a carport: required or not?

Since it is bulky and may sometimes require some preliminary work depending on the chosen installation options, a carport structure may require a building permit. As is the case for a pergola or simply for a terrace or a garden shed, it all comes down to size and surface area!

Of course, the rules may differ depending on the urban situation in which the owner finds themselves and sometimes, they may need to submit an administrative file and thus apply for a building permit or simply file a prior declaration of works.

Although CliKIT structures come in kit form, kit carports are still considered as non-removable constructions in the eyes of the State. The legislation is therefore the same as for a pergola, and the surface area of the structure plays a role in whether or not authorization from the town hall is required.

Things are however straightforward: if your carport has a ground coverage of more than 20 square meters, a building permit must be submitted to the town hall before its installation. Below this surface area, the legislation does not require you to apply for a building permit.

However, you will still need to visit your local town hall for a carport ranging from 5 to 20 square meters. Indeed, a prior declaration of works is mandatory for this type of structure, but this obligation is merely a formality that takes only a few minutes. However, there is also a slight subtlety below 5m2 of ground coverage. If you live in a protected area, a declaration will also be required. Nevertheless, such a surface area only concerns carports intended for motorcycles or bicycles, since a city car is considered to occupy that same surface when parked.

What is the advantage of a carport?

The list is long as a carport is packed with major advantages. The aesthetics within your property is, for example, worth considering, as these modern structures are capable of enhancing the side of a house or shaping the entrance to a garage. The options are numerous and should not be underestimated when planning your outdoor space.

Of course, the main advantage of a carport remains, quite logically, what it brings to the safety and parking of your vehicle or vehicles. At a lower cost than a garage, or as a complement if you already have one, the carport protects your car from bad weather, whether in summer or in winter. The same applies to the family's bicycles or other belongings you wish to shelter under a structure that perfectly bridges the gap between outdoors and indoors.

Finally, the carport can also prove its versatility and transform into different functionalities. It does not have the same advantages as a pergola, but it can also offer a shaded area during the summer, for example during large family gatherings.

The available types of carports

At CliKIT and also at other carport retailers, there are generally two main families of carports. The main difference between the two comes from the material used for the structure: aluminum or wood.

These are more traditional and have an obvious charm on older buildings. Overall, they also require additional maintenance in the long run, unlike aluminum, renowned for its sturdiness and durability.

From an aesthetic point of view, the aluminum carport also has the advantage of adapting to all types of homes. Modern, flat-roofed, traditional, or wooden? An aluminum carport structure always brings its aesthetic and modern touch.

Can you install a carport yourself?

Thanks to CliKIT, building your own wood carport or aluminum carport becomes child's play. It only takes a few hours to provide a brand new spot for your vehicle and also to enhance your property in the process. As with its pergolas, CliKIT offers custom-made creations and above all, in kit form. It is therefore entirely possible to install a carport yourself and thus reduce the sometimes exorbitant costs when it is not possible to assemble the structure on your own.
