For a construction over 5m²

Please note: between 20 m² and 40 m², a building permit is required if the works bring the total surface area of the construction to more than 150 m² once completed (which requires the involvement of an architect).

To add an outbuilding to your garden, authorisation is sometimes required. First, a distinction must be made between permanent installations (garden shed, pergola, fixed barbecue, ...) and temporary installations (above-ground pool, gazebo, garden greenhouse, ...). The characteristics and surface area of the outbuilding then come into play..

This rule applies in particular to:

• garden sheds and shelters,
• kiosks,
• pergolas,
• lightweight playground structures (swing sets, slides, swings, trampolines...),
• fixed barbecues (stone, brick),
• outdoor toilet cubicles or showers.

Beyond these thresholds allowing you to avoid any authorisation requirement, you must submit a prior declaration of works or apply for a building permit, depending on the dimensions and characteristics of your installation.
