Anchoring a carport to the ground: Our advice

Just like many structures, and particularly the pergolas offered by CliKIT, it is entirely possible to anchor your carport directly to the ground without necessarily having to attach it to a wall. For many homeowners wishing to provide shelter for their car in this way, choosing a freestanding kit carport can be done for practical or sometimes aesthetic reasons.

Indeed, it is not always possible to attach your carport to the side of your house or garage, and for this reason, another solution may be preferred — particularly if you want to park your personal vehicle or store other belongings on a different part of your property.

Generally, extending a pathway is an obvious solution in this regard, and when you want to assemble your carport — whether aluminum or wood — the question of fixing it to the ground comes to the forefront.

To meet all needs, we explain how to anchor your carport to the ground.

Anchoring a wooden carport to the ground

At CliKIT and more broadly, wooden carports are still very popular. They bring a traditional, warm feel that many homeowners appreciate around their home. However, wood requires more maintenance than aluminum, and this is logically a factor to consider, including when wondering how to anchor your carport to the ground. The type of roofing will also change the use and objectives of your carport, even before proceeding to enclose this type of shelter.

As is often the case with this type of structure, carports must be anchored using concrete anchor bolts, set directly within the foundations of the site hosting the car shelter. Beyond these structural requirements, wooden carports are then fixed using solid H-shaped anchoring systems.

By lifting the entire structure off the ground and avoiding direct contact between the wood and the surface, degradation is completely prevented, and standing water or ambient moisture cannot damage the wooden structure. By preparing the foundations in advance and setting the concrete anchor bolts, fixing a carport becomes very straightforward.

Significant savings compared to a garage, a resolutely modern aesthetic, and endlessly customizable: the advantages of an aluminum carport are also numerous. With the option to choose a freestanding carport or a classic wall-leaning car shelter, anchoring remains important and meticulous when fixing the structure to the ground.

When it comes to fixing and anchoring a carport to the ground, you need to make sure the surface is sufficiently strong and thick.

Therefore, following the same principle as with a wooden shelter, concrete anchor bolts must be set into a slab. After that, the kit assembly and ease of handling will follow the installation and fixing of the carport on the desired, pre-prepared surface.

The advantages of a ground-anchored carport

When you want to anchor your carport to the ground, this can first and foremost be a personal choice and not something done despite other fastening options being available! It must be said that in this respect, the advantages of a carport are numerous.

Indeed, placing a carport in a freestanding manner allows you to preserve space around your home and avoid cluttering the walls or the front of the property.

If you have a long driveway or a paved alley, it can also be worthwhile to place your carport a short distance from your house. This will create an open, airy feel that many homeowners choose so they don't necessarily have to park their vehicle right next to the house.

Carport: an obviously modular concept

Another decidedly positive aspect of ground-anchored carport structures is the almost infinite possibility of adapting and adjusting them to conditions or even to your own desires for change. With solutions to suit all budgets and many options that are easy to implement on any structure, CliKIT offers the creation of shade sails, pergola awnings, or glass curtains to help your shelter evolve.

To counter prevailing winds, better protect against weather conditions, or expand your carport to provide additional storage and shelving space, there are numerous options that also allow a ground-anchored carport to evolve over time.
