16/32mm Polycarbonate Comparison Selection Guide for your CLIMALUX Aluminium Pergola

The type of panel used for your pergola determines 95% of its effectiveness and how well it meets your wishes. You have a wide choice of different polycarbonate types with characteristics covering a broad range of needs. However, one question often remains unanswered: which polycarbonate thickness is right for your needs?

You can influence the perceived feeling

A pergola is designed to protect you from direct sunlight in summer. The sense of heat outdoors corresponds to the amount of UV rays you receive. As your pergola is an open space, you will naturally have at minimum the same temperature as outside.

You can influence the perceived warmth by opting for a heat-resistant roof covering.

Light transmission

This is the light that passes through your panel — the larger the value, the less the panel darkens the area beneath the pergola. This value is particularly important in winter. In the present case, more than twice as much light will be transmitted by the 16mm panel.

Insulation value

To put it simply, this is the capacity of your panel to retain heat coming from the inside. This value is important in the case of a conservatory, for example, but is of no use for an unheated pergola.

Retained energy

This is the amount of UV rays filtered by your panel. The higher this value, the lower the sensation of heat caused by direct sunlight. In our case, it remains identical for both panels: it is the surface treatment, not the thickness, that acts as a barrier.

Our recommendation

Unless you experience regular snowfall, we recommend opting for a 16mm roof covering, which will offer you the best protection/light ratio.
