How to install solar panels on your carport?

Installing a solar panel on a carport

In a period of ecological transition, producing low-carbon energy is an obvious step. It is therefore no surprise to see that the number of solar or photovoltaic panel installations continues to grow among private homeowners as well as professionals. On the other hand, durable materials are emerging among these same property owners for all types of construction. Aluminum is one of them, with its key advantages being an extended lifespan and minimal maintenance.

A trendy and eco-friendly solution: the solar carport

The trends are here, and to top it all off, they are compatible. Verandas, pergolas, and other carports are very popular among homeowners. And it is entirely possible to combine the useful with the pleasant by installing solar panels on the roof of your car shelter. Installing a solar panel on a carport is perfectly in keeping with the times and is part of a sustainable approach.

Fortunately, CliKIT is expanding its range to offer you the addition of photovoltaic panels on your carports and other aluminum structures, available as a kit in several dimensions. Here is a closer look at everything you need to know to install a photovoltaic panel and produce energy right above your parked car.

What is a solar carport?

It is one of the biggest trends in outdoor design, as its aesthetic appeal perfectly combines with its practical side. The solar carport is simply a car shelter on which solar panels are placed at roof level.

These allow you to benefit from an energy source without ever compromising the primary purpose of the carport — namely, parking your car safely and sheltered at home. It is an obvious installation when a garage is not an option or when an alternative is desired for parking or storing certain bulky items.

A solar carport therefore perfectly fits in with the times, bringing an elegant dimension to the home, with the option of making it freestanding or leaning it against the house wall.

The carport with photovoltaic panels retains all the advantages of a traditional carport and this is all the more true with a creation from CliKIT, available as a kit and in several sizes, in order to adapt to all the specific constraints of each home. But also, to all your desires!

Is authorization required to install solar panels?

Before thinking about the steps required to add photovoltaic panels to your structure, you must first look at the administrative obligations for a carport. As with all extensions, a carport requires prior declarations and may, in certain cases, require additional permits depending on the final surface area. The question then arises regarding the solar panels placed on the roof of the structure.

For the vast majority of solar installations, a planning permit must be issued by the town hall of your municipality . Depending on the power output, the height above the ground, and the location, the required authorizations may vary.

In all cases, a prior declaration of works will be mandatory, but if you stick to the "standard" surface area of a carport, you will be exempt from a building permit application.

Finally, note that only solar installations exceeding a power output of 50 MW require authorization from the official body DGEC.

Below this power output, as is very often the case for solar carports, no additional authorization is required.

What is the price of a solar carport?

The question comes up frequently and shapes future investment decisions. Quite logically, the investment may seem substantial when you add the cost of solar panels to the carport structure, but as is often the case with photovoltaic energy production, it is vital to think medium-term. The yield can be excellent, and as a result, the price of a solar carport can be recouped within a few years.

Based on the prices offered by CliKIT and still following the principle of kit assembly with no outside help, the price of a carport can range between €3,000 and €11,000.

Nevertheless, and as just mentioned, this substantial investment can be recouped through the production of your own electricity. This is why CliKIT offers you solar carports with energy self-consumption.

Producing electricity at sufficient power with your solar car shelter

There are two schools of thought when it comes to producing energy and electricity at home: resale or self-consumption. The latter enjoys many advantages, notably the fact that its installation is far simpler than that required for resale.

It is quite complex to set everything up to resell energy to EDF, whereas with self-consumption, the short circuit simplifies the installation of solar panels on your carport. The questions about such a photovoltaic installation are the same when you want to build your solar pergola, another solution offered by CliKIT.

Thanks to the energy produced and inherently saved, the return on investment is achieved within a few years. Self-consumption is thus a committed choice by CliKIT, which has already convinced many solar carport owners.

This is even more logical if you own an electric vehicle, with the possibility of charging your car directly under the carport using energy produced by the structure itself. A short, natural, and sustainably efficient circuit.

The versatility of a solar carport

Retaining all the advantages of a traditional carport, the solar carport adapts to all your outdoor needs. A carport can be much more than a simple car shelter thanks to all the possibilities offered by the CliKIT range. You can indeed wonder how to enclose your carport and quickly realize that there are numerous solutions for such an installation.

The line between outside and inside can become very thin, but above all, very practical when you step out of your car.
